Flying Lessons

It's estimated that in the UK alone some 8,000 people will start flying lessons this year. (Source: A.O.P.A.).

Until recent times, recreational aviation meant just one qualification was needed, namely the Private Pilots License (PPL). However, since the move to standardise aviation law throughout Europe, Joint Aviation Regulations (JAR) have facilitated a new lesser qualification, the National Pilots License (NPL)

The NPL has certain restrictions when compared to the PPL, but nothing to spoil the enjoyment of getting airbourne and also requires less minimum training.

The NPL course consists of a minimum of 32 hours flying training (plus flight exams), to include 10 hours solo flight, of which 4 hours must be solo cross country. Ground school and respective exams are identical to the PPL, plus you'll need an HGV-standard medical from your GP.

In comparrison, the PPL requires a minimum of 45 hours flight training, plus a flight skills test at the end of the training with an examiner, including 10 hours solo flight, of which 5 hours must be solo cross country and a more stringent medical with a CAA approved medical examiner.

The ground school for both courses must be taken in six subjects, including an oral Radio Telephony practical test to achieve the necessary RT license

Generally, the PPL course takes the following route.

45 Hours flying training, where you will learn

You will also take 7 straightforward written exams and 1 oral exam covering:

At the end of your training you will complete a practical flying test in order to be able to apply for your licence.
